The Cape was one of my first fishing trips away with mates about 20 years ago. We have continued to do the trip most years which has given me great knowledge of the area. One of my first motorbike rides was up there with Roy Kunda from Cape York Motorcycle Tours.

Crossing the Daintree River and riding the CREB track is a great blast! The roads and tracks change every day on this tour and I always enjoy the many creeks and rivers we cross heading north. It’s such a big area from the East to the West coast and although we see a lot, you will want to return with mates on a fishing trip to explore the area more or do a custom ride.

Itinerary

Day 1. Cairns to Lions Den

Today we head out of Cairns on the highway before we climb up the hill through Kuranda getting a feel for the bikes.

As we descend the other side it’s not long before we make a right turn onto a nice open twisty dirt road that will take us to lunch.

After lunch we head for Daintree where we cross the river and work up a sweat on the fantastic CREB track finally popping out at Wujal Wujal and making our way to The Lions Den Hotel for a cool treat and lots of laughs.

Day 2. Lions Den Hotel to Kalpowar Crossing

We depart camp and head to Cooktown, then ride out past the airport, through Hope Vale and onto Starke.

After Starke the track changes and so does our riding. We experience sand, bulldust and a few river crossings all the way to Cape Melville intersection. The track then opens up to road all the way into Kalpowar where the Unimog will be ready with a relaxing drink and dinner around the fire. If you’re keen we can flick for a Barra.

Day 3. Kalpowar Crossing to Archer River

After a big breakfast we head off through Lakefield National Park for a day boasting varied scenery including open plains, river crossings and coast.

We find a great spot for a snack and get stuck into the fast flowing trails that take us back onto the main drag into Coen Exchange Hotel for some lunch.

Following lunch it’s a quick run up the Development Road to Archer River.

Day 4. Archer River to Bramwell Station

Today we get to ride some well-known river crossings. We head up the road away from Archer River turning off towards the Lockhart River and the Iron Range National Park. It’s a mixture of fun terrain and we cross the Pascoe and Wenlock Rivers before making our way back out onto the Development Road and into Bramwell Station.

Day 5. Bramwell Station to The Tip

Today is the day for jumping into creeks with all your gear on to cool off! Following a quick trip from camp to Bramwell Junction for fuel, we hit the Old Telegraph Track crossing sandy creeks and muddy bog holes.

Gunshot is well worth a look and a swim in a few of the creeks will provide a much needed cool off. The best swimming hole which also boasts water falls is Fruit Bat Falls. After a relaxing swim we make our way to the Jardine Ferry and onto camp, exploring some of the local scenery at The Tip. This will be our last night watching the sunset.

Day 6. Options depending on flight time

Some Skytrans flights leave mid morning or late afternoon back to Cairns depending on tour and day of departure. If you have a late departure it would be worth organising the day with your mates and catching the ferry over to Thursday Island for a look around.
