Simpson Desert Tour

Alice Springs to Birdsville
May 29th - Jun 1st 2017
Arrive Alice: May 28th 2017
Depart Birdsville: Jun 2nd 2017
Flight included back to Brisbane.

This journey is sentimental to me. I was born in Charleville and my childhood was filled with stories from my father about his many adventures in the Channel Country and the Diamantina Shire.

I truly believe that the best way to experience this beautiful, vast and remote area of this marvelous country is on a bike. We include your flight in the cost from Brisbane to Birdsville or return.

Itinerary

Day 1: Birdsville to Attora Knolls
After a big Birdsville breakfast, we head out west to meet the Unimog for morning tea.
We continue our adventure on the QAA Line. With some challenging tracks and dunes, we will stop for lunch at Poeppel Corner, the corner of state boundaries in Australia, where Queensland meets South Australia and the Northern Territory.
We continue along some great tracks end up camping near Approdinna Attora Knolls. The rare gypsum outcrops were once the highest dune crests in the area and are of great Aboriginal and scientific importance.

Day 2: Attora Knolls to The Lone Gum Tree
After enjoying another beautiful start to the day with a fresh bush breakfast in the Simpson Desert, we embark on The Rig Road, boasting plenty to explore including abandoned oil wells and the Mokari Airstrip.
We will also travel along the WAA Line, the Erabena Track and the Knolls Track, ending at the Lone Gum Tree. As its name suggests, it is a lonely Coolabah tree surrounded by shrubs and grasses.

Day 3: The Lone Gum Tree to Georges Corner
Today we embark on more deep sand and sand dunes as we ride across the remaining tracks in the Simpson Desert before arriving near Georges Corner.

Day 4: Georges Corner to Mount Dare Hotel

Today we leave behind the 1100 sand dunes and enjoy an easy ride to Purnie Bore for morning tea.

We then continue to the famous Dalhousie Hot Springs, a collection of over 60 natural artesian springs, for a dip and some lunch before setting off to Mount Dare riding along the old Ghan Railway.

Day 5: Mount Dare Hotel to Alice Springs

It’s the final day of our adventure and we intend to make the most of it. Leaving Mount Dare, we ride along the Finke Track back to Alice Springs. It’s a challenging track and the whoops are relentless. You have the option of riding on the main gravel road if the track proves too difficult.
